The Environment and the coronavirus: is the pandemic benefiting the climate?

The global pandemic known as COVID-19 has taken over 50,000 lives and has left nearly every continent vulnerable and desperate to find a cure. People everywhere have been told to stay home and only go out for essential trips.

Although the headlines are grim, a surprising silver lining has appeared about the environmental impacts of the coronavirus. With tweets that the water is clearing in the Venice canals and studies done about pollutant levels in Italy, there could be new hope in terms of the climate crisis.

To separate facts from fiction, I spoke to Philip James, Professor of Urban Data at Newcastle University, about whether the coronavirus is actually having a positive effect on the environment, whether it will last, and what it means for researchers.
